The squad is designed for our more experienced judoka and anyone who wishes to focus on competitive Judo. Improving your competition experience and abilities is the purpose of the squad but your hard work and dedication is a must. Trying out to be part of the squad is a decision that should not be taken lightly and there needs to be a firm commitment to training and club visits. Squad Members are also expected to wherever at all possible, compete in all SJA and the local BJA competitions.

Squad members, will at some point, need to purchase a BJA Licence to have access to an increased opportunity of competitions and courses. The BJA is the National Governing body for Judo and affiliation means access to national competitions and events. The BJA License fee is subsidized by Shodan Judo and for more information click HERE.

The only other fee is the Monthly Training fee of £3.50 with all of this going in to squad funds. Obviously the more funds that we raise then the more we have to spend on traveling and accommodation costs for certain Competitions.

The Squad will train every First Friday of each Month at

Beversbrook Sports Facility
Beversbrook Road
Calne
Wiltshire
SN11 9FL

If you are able to make the commitment necessary then we are holding trial sessions on Friday December 6th and January 3rd. If the coaches feel that you are at right level to cope with the physical and technical demands of being a squad member then you will be awarded a place. To keep your place you will need to show committment to attending squad training sessions, club visits and Competitions.

It is recommended that a Competition Standard Judo Suit is worn to BJA Competitions. These Suits are heavier, thicker and may need to be worn a few times so you can get used to the extra weight and feel.

BJA License

Most SJA members are more then happy attending SJA sessions and our numerous events spaced throughout the year. However, our more competitive members are likely to want to enter competitions on a more frequent basis, enrolling in the various other BJA courses and possibly going down the BJA coaching route so you can be qualified to coach in schools and even run your own club.

Anyone within the SJA has the option to purchase a BJA License but it is recommended for our squad members to do so.The BJA is the National Governing body for Judo and a BJA License means being eligible for a number or regional and national competitions and events. The BJA License fee is subsidized by the SJA as a major benefit of being an SJA members (Trowbridge Club has a different system in place)

If you choose to purchase a BJA License so as to experience Judo in a wider context to the SJA, then there are several License options as detailed below.

Licence type

BJA Licenses are available to purchase now.

Speak to your club coach for more information

Fee

BJA Pay as you Throw

This limited license is valid for four Months & provides an opportunity to participate in BJA activities on a trial basis to ascertain the type of Judo you want to take part in. Some squad members may wish to be part of the competition squad but not participate in BJA competitions and events in which case the BJA License is not needed whereas for others, the more competitions and events available to take part in the better. This Pay as you Throw option gives the opportunity to try before fully committing to an annual BJA License.

Junior & Intermediate £5

Seniors £6

 Full BJA Licence

There is a £5 discount for every second and subsequent member from the same family.

Juniors & Intermediates

£14 for first year & £10 for each year of renewal.

Seniors - £25 for the first year & £20 for each year of renewal.

Seniors aged 16 and 17 and in full time education

£14 for first year & £10 for each year of renewal.

Once you have purchased your license then you have two options. You can enter our squad events which will be those listed in the squad calendar. For these events there will be several fellow judoka from our clubs / squad entering. There will also be a club coach present and transport may be organized by the club - probably a minibus.

In addition to the group events in the calendar, you will have the option to choose and enter events on your own. Just remember to let us know what you do and how you get on so we can put it on our News page. By going off and entering events as you wish, means that you can compete and train until your hearts content.

Should anyone in the squad is unsure about whether to purchase a BJA License then please speak to Sarah or Jason and we can help you decide what is best for you.

BJA courses include Judo Gymnastics, Judo fit Course and Preparation for performance. For more information on BJA Competition and events visit http://www.britishjudo.org.uk/events-calendar
